Had an old Moen 1222 positemp cartridge, probably original to the house — 21 years old. We have well/hard water, so I feared the worst. I had a generic knockoff puller from Amazon and its grooves didn't sit over the cartridge ears correctly. Here comes the ONA Puller, highly recommended across multiple DIY plumber forums and Reddit. It's premium, but believe me, IT IS WORTH IT. No $200+ plumber service call, and with the new cartridge, my water flows nicely and we finally have hot water in the guest bath.
I had a cartridge that was absolutely stuck. I used a standard cartridge puller, and after twisting and yanking for over an hour, it only moved about a half inch. I bought the ONA puller, and I had the cartridge out in a matter of minutes. It's very easy to use, it's extremely effective, and it doesn't yank on your pipes. I would gladly recommend this to anyone replacing a cartridge.
This tool is a HUGE help in removing the Moen Posi-Temp 1222 cartridge! Years ago it took me FIVE hours and a lot of bad words to remove a Moen cartridge. I ordered the Moen cartridge puller but after reading reviews, I immediately cancelled and ordered this one instead. I am so glad I spent the extra money because the ONA works great! I was able to remove the stuck cartridge in only a few minutes.
Quality tool. I like this tool. Superior to the factory tool. Have DIY'd two 1222 cartridges so far with it. Very bad water at my location, no water softener for years. Going slow is the key. Maybe warming up the valve helps, don't think it can hurt. Tips: run hot water for 5 minutes before shutting off, slowly turn the crank, clean the valve housing with vinegar, flush debris, grease the new valve. Good luck.
Definitely spend the money to get this tool before trying to remove a Posi-Temp cartridge. I used this to remove a 26-year-old seized-up Posi-Temp 1222 cartridge. I was pleasantly surprised how smoothly and effortlessly the cartridge came out with this tool, after the nightmare I went through on another shower with a standard puller.
The HUGE difference between this tool and the cheaper Danco puller: if you have hard water, haven't replaced the cartridge in over a decade, or are on well water, the cartridge is likely stuck. The Danco works on the principle that once you jar the cartridge loose you can wiggle it out. This was not the case on either shower I replaced. The ONA puller has long slots which allow for even force and the cartridge to be pulled all the way out. Worth every penny!

American-made precision from a company that knows plumbing tools
ONA Puller is built for one job that often turns into a difficult one — removing stubborn Moen cartridges cleanly, efficiently, and with more control. Designed for professional plumbers and serious repair work, it helps extract frozen, corroded, and hard-to-remove cartridges without relying on improvised methods that can increase frustration or risk damage to the valve.
The story behind ONA Puller begins long before the product itself. It traces back to Lauren D. Walter, a machinist and problem-solver who worked in plumbing supply in the Los Angeles area after serving in the Navy during World War II. In the early 1950s, he saw how difficult it was for plumbers to identify concealed valves and locate the right replacement parts. That practical challenge led to the development of the first stem guide.
In 1986, Barry E. Walter, Sr. acquired the assets and sample library that had been built over decades and founded Barry E. Walter, Sr. Co. with a clear vision: use modern manufacturing, tight tolerances, and disciplined growth to keep producing the parts and tools the plumbing trade still needs. Today, that same mindset continues through the next generation of family leadership.
